THE DIY COLD AND FLU TONIC THAT WILL KEEP YOU HEALTHY ALL SEASON LONG!

Flu season is here… joy to the world! Yes, I'm home sick with the flu and it's just the beginning of the flu season.

And while it’s fun to snuggle down under the sheets with a book and a steaming hot cup of tea, it’s not half as pleasurable to have the chills, fever, body ache, headache, cough, cold, fatigue and the zillion other maladies that accompany the flu.

And like with all things horrendous that seem like they’re trying to kill me, I often turn to old-school potions that my grandmother swears by. After all, if it’s worked for upwards of a century, there’s no reason it won’t be a saving grace now.

Like this flu tonic, which is perfect for tackling the ubiquitous beast. Ginger helps you sweat out the toxins, while calming the chills, nausea and upset stomach. Turmeric has been proved to reduce the viral replication of 90% and more of cells infected by influenza virus. It also stops the infection from spreading and warms the body. Honey is great for soothing a sore throat and is a potent natural antibiotic, making it great at boosting the body’s ability to fight an infection. Lemons are replete with vitamin C, which brings down inflammation and steps up the immune system.


No, I am not a doctor… neither was my grandmother… so don’t take the flu tonic in place of any medicines you’ve been prescribed. But it’s a great forward defence and also works brilliantly as a protective measure. Have it 2-3 times a day and you may stave off the flu virus before it hits in the first place. If the flu has already taken over your life, step it up to 4-5 times daily to help chase it away.

Ingredients

Some fresh ginger (roughly a piece the size of your index finger)
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon honey (or to taste)
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder (or 1/2 teaspoon fresh turmeric root, grated)
1 cup water


1. Peel and grate or roughly chop the ginger into small pieces
2. Pour everything into a small pan and place over medium heat; remove when it comes to a boil
3. Strain the mixture into a mug; drink while hot (but don’t scorch your mouth!)
